Frederic Houriet No 67, circa 1825. Extremely fine and rare 18 ct. gold pocket chronometer with thermometer and a tourbillon regulator, in original mahogany three body case and outer wooden travelling case.

Four body massive "bassine et filets" engine tumed case. Gold cuvette engraved with the principal technical features. White enamel regulator dial with small off set Roman hour chaptering, symmetrical subsidiary seconds with the thermometer sector below, outer Arabic minute ring. Blued steel hands. Very fine gilt brass 22"' three quarter plate movement with a gold train of wheels, 15 jewels, cylindrical pillars, fusee with maintaining power, spring detent escapement with a micrometric adjustment, gold escape wheel with a polished steel bridge, Eamshaw type two arm compensated balance with two trapezoidal weights and platinum screws, gold spherical balance spring, free sprung. The escapement is set on a one minute tourbillon regulator driven by the minute wheel. The two armed polished steel semi circular cage set with a platinum mass in order to equilibrate the escapement weight, diamond endstone. Typical Houriet bimetallic thermometer set on the front plate. The Houriet mark "H.F. 67" punched on the front plate beneath the dial. In very good condition. Diam. 60 mm. Two chronometers, bearing No 98 and 99 were presented to the Société des Amis des Arts in Geneva in 1828, therefore F.H. 67 was almost certainly made circa 1825. Only four other identical chronometers are known; the earliest, signed Dubois & Cie, in the Beyer collection in Zurich, is bearing No F.H. 58, the Iater one, in the M.I.H. in La Chaux de Fonds, bearing No.101, without the monogram "EH." was certainly completed after the death of Houriet in 1830. The caliber of two other chronometers of this type, one signed: Frederic Louis Favre-Bulle, in the M.I.H., the other signed: Hunt & Roskell, in the British Museum, is slightly different, the back plate being not shaped any more. Such a caliber was used by Urban Jurgensen for all his pocket chronometers and also chosen by Breguet for the later development of his pocket chronometers set with a tourbillon regulator, after 1812. All the ebauches were supplied by Houriet and Breguet had to stop the production of such chronometers after the death of Houriet in 1830 ( Cecil Clutton and George Daniels: Clocks and Watches in the Collection of the Worshipful Company of Clockmakers, page 64). The spherical balance spring was devised by Houriet circa 1814 (Essai de la Mesure du Temps par les Horlogers, manuscript in the Archives du Canton de Neuchâtel). A metallic thermometer in the form of a pocket watch, was invented by Houriet circa 1810. It is described in an advertisement bearing the Houriet's own signature. Houriet was the first to set his watches and chronometers with such thermometers.
