Rolex, Reference 6098 Produced from around 1950 to about 1955, the Ref. 6098 is known to collectors as the pre-Explorer. Developed first as a precision model and later as an officially certified chronometer, it was available in 18K gold and more rarely in steel with either a plain metal or honeycomb dial. As researched, it is also the first watch that is part of the Explorer family and was the only Explorer made with a white dial. The name "Explorer" was registered by Rolex in January 1953. Also according to our research, the dial of the Ref. 6098 was the only model made that did not feature Arabic numerals at the quarters, until the introduction of the Explorer II.
