Notes

The Rhône Glacier
The Rhône Glacier (glacier du Rhône in French; Rhonegletscher in German; Rottengletscher in Walliser German; ghiacciaio del Rodano in Italian) is a glacier in the Swiss Alps and the source of the river Rhône and one of the primary contributors to Lake Geneva. It is located at the north-eastern end of the Canton of Valais in Switzerland, at the Fourche Mountain. It gives rise to the Rhône, upstream of Gletsch, which then flows into the Conches valley. The glacier stretches for 8 kilometres and is just over 1 000 metres wide. Its surface area is 17 km². Like most Alpine glaciers, it has retreated considerably since the mid-19th century. It is easily accessible via the Furka Pass road. A gallery dug into the ice allows you to visit the interior of the glacier.
