Outstanding astronomical observation pocket watch with double movement and double display, mean time and sidereal time, antimagnetic, with stop-functions, two visible balances and two cylindrical hairsprings, made for the Ottoman market.

18K pink gold case, open-face, keyless-winding, round-shaped, large, heavy and impressive astronomical observation pocket watch, made for the Ottoman market, with stop-functions and three horological complications:
  • Two barrels with differential gears and bidirectional-winding inspired by Louis-Elisée Piguet’s (1836-1924) works (according to the patent which will be granted in 1895)
  • Two independently operating and stopping movements (stop-balances activated by the coaxial push-piece on the crown; each movement can be stopped consecutively and restarted at the same time, in unison)
  • Hour of sidereal time (subsidiary dial at 2 o’clock with Turkish numerals)

White colour enamel (three-piece) dial, with two subsidiary dials; at 10 o’clock, for the mean time with black painted radial Roman numerals; at 2 o’clock, for the sidereal time with black painted radial Turkish numerals; two set of pink gold “Spade” hands.


Probably made by special order for the Sultan of Egypt.

Caliber 21’’’, gilded brass, two going barrels, two trains of wheels, 36 jewels, two straight-line equilibrated lever escapements, two cut bimetallic compensated balances with gold and platinum poising screws, Palladium cylindrical hairsprings each with terminal curves, polished steel index-regulators; the balances pass through the main-plate and are visible in two apertures in the dial at 4 and 8 o’clock.

Signature case and dial are signed and numbered Lattes Frères Genève N°10789, under the dial the movement has a scratched N°7556 and a stamped N°10789 and an oval monogram E.L.D

C. Five-body, "bassine et filets", entirely decorated in black enamel basse taille, the front with a pharaoh flanked by two sphinxes and two obelisks, the back with ruins of Karnak with the Valley of the Kings in the background, bezels and band in repeated pattern, gold hinged engine-turned cuvette. D. White enamel ring with radial Roman numerals, outer minute divisions with five-minute Arabic markers, subsidiary sunk seconds, center with automaton scene depicting Chronos forging his scythe on translucent Imperial blue enamel over engine-turning. Gold "Spade" hands. M. 43 mm ø (19???), rhodium-plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 31 jewels, straight line calibrated lever escapement, cut-bimetallic compensation balance, Breguet balance spring, repeating on gongs through activating slide in the band.Signed on the cuvette.Diam. 54 mm.

C. Three-body, "bassine et filets", solid, concave bezels, covers unusually decorated with small gold lozenges with a quadruple leaf pattern alternating with silver ones with trefoil leaves, both within niello, both covers with applied gold crowns surmounting texts in Persian, signifying "King" on one side and "Mohammed Toussoun" on the other. D. On one side: white enamel, radial Roman numerals, outer minute ring, subsidiary regulating dial below XII o'clock, three small apertures for days, dateand months. On reverse: matte silver with Islamic numerals and outer minute divisions, the center with applied gold floral and foliate decoration, subsidiary sunk seconds also with Islamic numerals, four apertures for days, date, month in Islamic characters, and moon phases. Both sides with blued steel "spade" hands.
