BLANCPAIN FIFTY FATHOMS 3H BUND STEEL Blancpain, Fifty Fathoms, No. 1468. Made for the German Navy combat divers circa 1975. Fine and unusual, centre second, self-winding, water- resistant, stainless steel diving military wristwatch with date.

Three body, polished, satine, screwed case back with military assignment numbers, revolving black bezel screwed to the case sustaining a crystal of 5 mm. thick, the screwed winding-crown on the 4 is completely inserted in the body of the case. Black with tritium-coated indexes, on the 6 the 3H logo which mentions the tritium coating in the dial, aperture for the date. "Baton" tritium-coated white hand for the hours and orange for the minutes. 12"' signed Rayville on an ETA base CD 2873, rhodium plated, 25 jewels, lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock-absorber, self compensating flat balance-spring.

As an elite unit spending large amounts of time underwater using CCUBA (closed circuit underwater breathing apparatus), there was no need for markings on the bezel as found on most diving watches, creating this unique "sterile" bezel. Mounted on a massive 15 mm.case, made by SQUALE/ VON BUREN, a rare opportunity to acquire a military dive watch, a model never made available to the public.

Property of the Original Owner Launched in 1965 as a successor to the MEMOVOX DEEPSEA, the POLARIS was JAEGER LECOULTRE's response to the ever-increasing popularity of recreational scuba diving. Developed for the American market and designed in a massive 42 mm.case, it featured an internal revolving bezel as well as an alarm function and a date. Equipped with the Jaeger caliber K825 that revolutionized the watch world a few years before as the world's first automatic alarm watch, the Polaris offered divers reliability and endurance. The first generation was fitted with a plain full back and a dial with applied baton indexes, the second generation of 1968-70 were drilled for better sound emission and a dial with large luminous indexes. The total production of the Polaris model is believed to be fewer than 1714 units, manufactured between 1965 and 1970.

The ROLEX MILITARY SUBMARINER wristwatches issued to the BRITISH ROYAL NAVY featured a dial with encircled T (to indicated the use of TRITIUM LUMINESCENT), large sword hands, bezel calibrated to 60 minutes, movements with hacking (stop) seconds and engraved case-back with Ministry of Defense item code and issue number, additionally the inner case-back is engraved with the full serial number to ensure the head and back remain matched. During routine servicing, often original parts were unavailable and many MilSubs found today are fitted with standard 5513 parts. A MilSub in original configuration, such as this example, that retains its correct hands, dial, bezel and case-back is very rare to find and referred to as a FULL SPEC example.
