With certificate of the Russian national treasure department dated 25.03.2015. The movement of this watch is copied in wood from a type made in western Europe during the second half of the 18th century until the early 19th century. Watches made of birchwood are usually made by the Bronnikov family of watchmakers working in Vjatka, Russia. However, the watches made by Bronnikov are quite distinctive; the movements are usually made of wood and bone and the reverse of the dial forms the front plate for the wheel-train.

Property of a Swiss collector William Ilbery (ca. 1760-1839) - Active in London from 1780 in Goswell Street, he moved to Duncan Terrace towards the end of the 18th century. Following JAMES COX in London and JAQUET DROZ in Switzerland, he also came to specialize in the production of luxury watches for the Chinese Market. His early production was very much in the English style, featuring a full plate movement and an English type single wheel duplex escapement. However, for his highest quality watches, he incorporated a spring detent escapement. Later, the watch movements he produced were greatly inspired by the Lepine caliber with free-standing barrel, as were Jaquet Droz's Swiss production signed in London and those of WILLIAM ANTHONY, who worked in London. Often found ornamented with rural, floral or landscape scenes, this is the only example sold by Antiquorum that features paillonne enamelled decoration, a technique introduced by Jaquet Droz as early as 1775. The peacock pattern was very popular in China, but scarcely used for the European Market. The peacock enamel decoration gives the viewer a mesmerising view of changing colours and light reflections depending on the angle: just like the real feathers of the majestic bird. Bought by the actual owner in the 1986 April 13th Antiquorum sale in Geneva, it has remained untouched and unused since that date.

Barrauds The first watchmaker of the family was Francis-Gabriel (1727-1795). His sons Paul- Philippe (1752-1820) and John (dates unknown) were working with their father by 1780. In 1796 he entered into a partnership with William Howells and George Jamison, to make chronometers based on Mudge's original design. Howells, who had been Mudge's junior worker, brought with him important technical knowledge. Alongside Barraud's production of chronometers, a range of other clocks and watches were produced, and a major business was the exportation of plain and musical clocks to China and India. This was continued by their successors and eventually led to the establishment of a branch in Calcutta. In 1838 the Chronometer maker John Richard Lund was taken into partnership, and with the death of the last horological Barraud, Hilton Paul, in 1880, the business reverted entirely to the Lund family.

This deck Chronometer watch was submitted successively (OR SUCCESSFULLY?) at the Geneva observatory where it obtained a bulletin de marche for first class category from August to October 1920, it was then immediately submitted to the National Physical laboratory in Teddington where it obtained its Kew A certificate. Amazingly, all the documentation pertaining to these trials have been kept with the watch and even the original certificate that mentions the double transportation cases. A truly amazing time capsule.
