Niton S.A., Geneva Swiss trademark registered by Jeannet, Morel and Bourquin under No. 45 822, on December 12, 1919, under the name “Niton S.A., Fabricants d’horlogerie, Manufacture de montres artistiques, chronomètres, montres plates et ultra-plates, montres-bracelets à heures sautantes, à quantième et phases de lune” (Niton S.A., Manufacturers of timepieces, Manufacture of artistic watches, chronometers, flat and ultra-flat watches, jumping hours wristwatches, with calendar and moon phases). The manufacture of Niton watches was created in Geneva in 1919 by two craftsmen from Vacheron Constantin, Alfred Bourquin (1887-?) and Edouard Morel (1887-?). It was established in 1924 at 24, bis rue de la Servette. At first, they specialize in the manufacture of watches whose movements are designed and manufactured by them. They are distinguished by their ultra-thin pocket watch calibres and their “baguette” movements with winders from below, at 12 o’clock or 3 o’clock; although they manufacture a whole range of other calibres, in particular of form, and, jewellery watches. The sales method consists in selling directly to stores (for example, Gübelin in Lucerne, Golay Fils & Stahl in Geneva) or watch manufacturers, to which it provides either the movements alone or complete watches (for example, Chopard or Patek Philippe in Geneva). Production remains artisanal. Changing modes, the crisis of the 1930s, industrial productions will force them to change course and move towards other manufacturing concepts. In 1940, Niton sold his manufacturing rights to Ebauches S.A. of Granges / Grenchen. Finally, the brand was bought in 1957 by Carlo Sarzano, who will give it a new impetus by producing gold and gold metal watches of quality. In 1971, Niton merged with Sarcar S.A., already owned by Carlo Sarzano since 1948, and legally de facto disappears.

Marzo, Laurent (Lorenzo; 1865-1929) Lorenzo Raimondo Mariano José Marzo was born in Madrid on March 15, 1865. He is the son of Juan Marzo and Rosa Carles. His paternal uncle is Francisco Marzo († 1891), a famous Madrid jeweller and silversmith who works for the Spanish royal family. Lorenzo seems to learn his job at this uncle who at the end of his career is associated with the jewellers Garcia and Florès. In 1891, following the death of his uncle, their company was dissolved and Lorenzo left the following year, in September 1892, for Paris; he is 27 years old. On May 31, 1890, he married in Madrid Elvira Altuna y Aguirre (c.1867/1868- 1916); the couple (domiciled 22 Calle de las Infantas) will have three sons, including Rafael (Raphaël; † 1958) who will take over the business. In Paris, after working for several years as a craftsman-jeweller, Lorenzo Marzo ?? now Laurent ?? settled in 1901 on his own. On July 6 of this year, he filed with the service of the Guarantee of Paris his hallmark of master, with the initials “L M” and like different “a pincer”. His address is 207, rue Saint-Honoré. On March 3, 1911, Marzo joined forces with Eugène Laillet (a 10- year partnership with a capital of 750,002 francs). They have a shop, “Marzo & Laillet”, at 22, rue de la Paix; prestigious artery that place Vendôme leads to the Opéra Garnier. That same year, we note that Marzo is a member of the office of the Spanish Chamber of Commerce in Paris. He is also a member of the Chambre Syndicale de la Bijouterie. In 1914, the Marzo House opened a store in Biarritz (6, place de la Mairie), another in 1915, in Madrid (32 Calle de Alcalá), and another in San Sebastián in the Spanish Basque Country. It will later have a branch in Havana (Cuba) where you will find the creations of the house but also objects of art and Parisian trinkets. In 1915, the two partners, Marzo and Laillet, separate. Marzo remains alone at 22, rue de la Paix, while Laillet settles at 5, rue de la Paix. On March 8, 1921, Marzo had his master mark erased, which seemed to indicate that he stopped producing his jewels. On August 13, 1927, Laurent Marzo was made knight of the Legion of Honour (under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, file No. 36 102). In 1928, he married, in second marriage, Jeanne Privé, who created in 1919 the “Maison de Décoration” (83, avenue Niel), an antique store. He died on January 20, 1929, at the age of 64, at his home in Neuilly-sur-Seine (52, avenue de Neuilly). He is buried in the Batignolles cemetery (in the same vault as his first wife). His son Raphaël continues the company Marzo. The workshop occupies many employees, many of whom have been trained by Laurent Marzo. In 1923, the company “L. Marzo” becomes “Marzo & Fils”. Raphaël Marzo is the husband of Conchita Cuesta; the couple with 4 children. At the Exposition internationale des Arts décoratifs et industriels modernes (International Exhibition of Decorative and Modern Industrial Arts), which is held in Paris from April to October 1925, the house Marzo receives a Grand Prix and is equal to the other major houses of Parisian jewellery (mainly located in the neighbourhood of place Vendôme and rue de la Paix): Boucheron, Cartier, Dusausoy, Fouquet, Lacloche, Linzeler & Marchak, Mauboussin, Templar, Van Cleef & Arpels, Vever, etc. In reports of the time, we note that the house Marzo is noticeable by the use of blued steel parts in the ornamentation of his Art Deco jewellery.

Presentation watch A presentation watch is a watch offered by, or on its behalf, by a ruler / leader (Emperor, King, President, Prime Minister, Company Director, etc.) as an acknowledgment or thanks to a third person. Victor Emmanuel III (Vittorio Emanuele III; Naples, November 11, 1869 ?? Alexandria, Egypt, December 28, 1947), King of Italy (1900-1946), Emperor of Ethiopia (1936-1941) and King of the Albanians (1939-1943) After a mainly military education, he came suddenly to the throne in 1900 on the assassination of his father, King Umberto I (1844-1900). A tractable constitutional monarch, he accepted a Liberal cabinet and readily acquiesced in Italy’s war against Ottoman empire in 1911 and entrance into World War I in 1915. When the strains put on the parliamentary system by the war brought Benito Mussolini (1883-1945) to the fore, Victor Emmanuel failed to prevent the Fascist seizure of power, though it apparently lay in his hands to do so merely by signing the decree of martial law proposed by the cabinet. He was quickly reduced to a figurehead or less by Il Duce dictatorship, but in 1943, following disastrous Italian military reverses in World War II, capped by the Allied invasion of Sicily, Victor Emmanuel surprised the world by having Mussolini arrested and installing Marshal Pietro Badoglio (1871-1956) as premier. The move failed to extricate Italy from the war or the King from his difficult position, and finally, on June 5, 1944, the day after the Allied liberation of Rome, he named his son Crown Prince Umberto lieutenant general of the realm, relinquishing all power for himself but retaining his title of king. In 1946 public opinion forced a plebiscite to decide between the monarchy and a republican form of government. In an effort to influence the vote in favour of the dynasty, Victor Emmanuel abdicated in favour of Umberto (May 9, 1946), but the plebiscite resulted in a victory for the republic, and both Victor Emmanuel and Umberto went into exile. Presentation watch to the cypher of Victor Emmanuel III - Hausmann & Co., Rome, No. 1 010 857, circa 1915. Antiquorum, Geneva, auction, November 14, 2004, lot 299, sold for the amount of CHF 6 325.- (Estimation: CHF 6 000.- / 8 000.-). Antiquorum, Hong Kong, auction, June 25, 2011, lot 313, sold for the amount of HK$ 50 000.- (Estimation: HK$ 40 000.- / 60 000.-). Presentation watch to the cypher of Victor Emmanuel, then Duke of Savoy - Patek Philippe & Co., Geneva, No. 97 623, delivered to Musy Padre e Filgli, Torino, on October 9, 1897, for the amount of 910 francs (with chronograph and 30-minute recorder at 12). Antiquorum, Geneva, auction, April 12, 1987, lot 111, sold for the amount of CHF 18 150.- Patek Philippe Museum, Geneva (Inv. P-625). Bibliography Tellier, Arnaud, & Didier-Chaponnière, Mélanie, Timepieces for Royalty, 1850-1910, by Patek Philippe, Geneva, Patek Philippe Museum Editions, 2005, pp. 130-135. Hausmann & Co., Rome Hausmann & Co. was initiated in 1794 out of the workshop which had been started by Giovanni Romano Ricci at Palazzo Piombino in Piazza Colonna. In 1870, Ernst Hausmann, a young German clockmaker joins the firm. In 1889, the headquarters of the shop were moved to a temporary office in via Bocca di Leone. A year later, in 1890, the store’s headquarters moved to definitively to the current address of via del Corso, 406. In 1895, Hermann Frielingsdorf, a German technician, joins the firm who become Hausmann & Co. In 1902, the company opens a store in Naples, via Santa Brigida, and in Genova, piazza de ‘Ferrari. In 1906, the firm participated in the International Exhibition of Milano (presenting a precision pendulum clock) and receives a Diploma of Honour. In 1978, a new shop opens in New York, at the corner of Madison Avenue and 59th Street. In 2001, inauguration of a shop in via dei Condotti in Rome, who will become in 2019 the Patek Philippe Boutique di Roma. In 2010, opening of a third store in Rome, via del Babuini. In 2018, the firm and Rolex open a new boutique, via dei Condotti. The year 2019 marks the Hausmann & Co. Jubilee with its 225 years anniversary (1794-2019). Today, the company represents around 20 Swiss watch brands, including Vacheron Constantin, Lange & Söhne, Patek Philippe, IWC, Jeager- LeCoultre, Cartier, Breguet, F.P. Journe, Panerai, etc.

Multiple enamelling techniques It is extremely rare to find a watch of this era with a case decorated with multiple enamelling techniques (champlevé, ramolayé, cloisonné-work imitation, flinqué, painting on enamel and fondant). At the time, in Geneva, a named L. Mayland has made a specialty of this type of decor as evidenced by the Archives of the house Patek Philippe regarding the few watches created in this genre for the Genevan manufacture.
