The glass opening in the case-back reveals a gold scene, repoussé, chased and engraved, depicting “The Temptation of Eve”: Eve offering the apple to Adam in the Garden of Eden, in the terrestrial paradise, surrounded by several animals of Creation with the Tree of Knowledge behind them; the snake, incarnation of Evil, goes around the scene while the movement is running, making one revolution per hour (its support is hidden under the pierced and engraved border of the dust cover).
White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals for the hours and radial Arabic numerals for the minutes (with two apertures, one for the winding, the other for the regulation of the movement); blue steel “Beetle & Poker” hands.

Outer case chased and engraved repoussé-work, signed “Moser f [ecit]” at the feet of the central figure; symmetrical elaborate volute and foliage repoussé-work border to the main scene which depicts a young musician playing a lyre, probably Orpheus, surrounded by animals (on the left, a bird, a stag, a wolf, a leopard and a boar, and the left, a lion, a lamb, a dog and a hare); outside the border, a frieze of small landscapes and buildings; large lateral hinge.
Inner case unusually decorated with foliate engraving around the edge, a grotesque mask at the base and small scene around the pendant; in the centre, a bird of paradise perched in reeds surrounded by a symmetrical border; inside, case-maker’s mark “E B” surmounted by a fleur-de-lys (possibly Edward Bradshaw or Edward Branstone Bayley, London).

Richard Upjohn Rococo double-sided hand mirror incorporating a watch, a miniature telescope and magnifier, made for the Chinese market; gilded bronze, silver, paste stones, mercury glass mirror

Ormolu (gilded bronze), silver and paste-set, double-sided “Rococo” hand mirror incorporating a key-winding round-shaped watch and a concealed miniature telescope and magnifier, made for the Chinese market.
Shaped handle cast and finely chased with “C” scrolls enclosing panels of floral decoration on a matted ground, terminating in a domed finial. Front with a flat circular mercury glass mirror within a parcel-fire-gilt silver frame set with facetted artificial white gem stones, intersected by single and crossed ribbons in similar red stones simulating ruby. Reverse with a concave magnifying mercury glass mirror with a moulded gilt bezel. A telescope is contained within the handle of the mirror and accessed by unscrewing the domed terminal finial. Comprising an outer tube with an inner draw tube for basic focusing. When removed this acts as a simple magnifier. The outer tube is threaded and screws into the finial to support the telescope when it is stored in the handle. The watch is set within a circular mount formed as part of the handle, with hinged silver bezel set similarly set with facetted artificial white gem stones, and glazed to protect the dial and hands. Case-back with a hinged and glazed gilt-metal bezel over the movement.
White enamel dial with radial Roman numerals, winding aperture at 6 o’clock. Pierced gold hands.
