Designed by famed horological architect GERALD GENTA and introduced to the public in 1976, the NAUTILUS Ref. 3700 was unlike anything seen previously from Patek Philippe. Initially only available in steel, advertisements promoted the model as suitable to be worn as well with a wetsuit as a black-tie due to the slim case design and water-resistance to a DEPTH of 120m. The 3700 saw the company's first true venture into sports watches and although alternative models have subsequently been introduced, none have experienced the success of the Nautilus. To ensure parts are not exchanged during servicing, the inner bezel of the Nautilus is stamped with the last three digits of the serial number.

From research, this example, fresh to the market from a private collector with case number 536007, is the earliest numbered gold 3700 to be offered publicly at auction in recent years and it can possibly be assumed, due to the similarly sequenced movement number 1304008, to be only the seventh gold reference 3700 manufactured. The inner bezel is numbered 007.
