MELLY - LARGE GOLD & ENAMEL WATCH - THE ALTAR OF LOVE Antoine Melly, No. 9115. Made circa 1780. Fine and rare, large, 20K gold, painted on enamel and pearl-set pocket watch with outer glazed protective case.
Two-body, "Louis XVI", the bezel chased with a repeated pattern and with applied rope-twist decoration, the back with an oval painted on enamel scene of two maidens releasing doves at the altar of love, opalescent pink sky background, outer mate gold border with champlevé enamel leaves and set with pearls, outermost border decorated to match the bezel. White enamel with radial Roman numerals, outer dot minute divisions and Arabic five minute numerals. Blued steel Breguet hands. 43 mm., giIt brass, full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement with micrometric potence adjustment, plain three armed brass balance, gilt brass continental cock with polished steel endpiece, silver regulation dial.
