Notes

Imhof, “à cadrans tournant” clock
In this so-called “à cadrans tournant” clock with revolving dials, it is in fact the two half-spheres bearing the hour and minute graduations that rotate; one in twelve hours, the other in one hour.
This model is inspired by both the traditional “à cercles tournant” clocks with revolving circle dials of the 18th century and the “veilleuses” night-light clocks of the 19th century. Note that the upper part of our clock can be disassembled and can receive a candle.
The time is set by turning the lower half-sphere by hand and placing the time scale in front of the index finger.
Some of these clocks produced by Arthur Imhof S.A. of La Chaux-de-Fonds bear the words “Tempus Fugit” on the top.
