Audemars Piguet began experimenting with skeletonized watches in the1920's. In 1971 the company launched a small series of 32 dress watches with skeletonized movements based on calibre 5017. In the subsequent years five more small series were made ending in 1975. The production in 1971 started with serial number 125181. Thus, the present watch is only the fourth one made by the company. A virtually identical watch was chosen by Gisbert L. Brunner, Christian Pfeiffer-Belli, and Martin K. Wehrlii to represent the company's achievements in their book Audemars Piguet, München, 1993, p. 91.
