Saïd Taghmaoui (Arabic: سعيد تغماوي), born July 19, 1973, in Villepinte (Seine-Saint-Denis Department), is a French-Moroccan actor who became a naturalised American in 2008.
His parents are Chleuhs (Berber ethnic group) from Essaouira (Moroccan port city in the Marrakech-Safi region). He grew up in Aulnay-sous-Bois, in the Cité des 3000. He has three brothers and five sisters. He left school at a very early age with the initial intention of pursuing a career in English boxing, a sport he practised from his teens and in which he became vice-champion of France in 1990.
He made his first appearance with the hip-hop group Assassin, through whom he met Mathieu Kassovitz, who gave him his first chance to reveal himself to the public in the film "La Haine": he was nominated for a César in 1996. Saïd quickly began to learn new languages, including English, which allowed him to start an international career, particularly in the United States, Italy and Germany.
He became one of the few French actors to film in the United States. His role as an Iraqi soldier in "Three Kings", alongside George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg, allowed him to launch his career in Hollywood. He also starred in the films "Hidalgo", "Spartan" and "I Love Huckabees".
In 2006, Omar Sharif presented him with the Golden Pyramid, an Egyptian award for the best actor in the Arab world, and paid tribute to him by saying: "You are my heir, my successor...".
In 2008, he obtained American nationality.
He played the role of Caesar in season five of the hit TV series "Lost: The Departed".
In 2009, he was chosen by the band U2 to play the main role in "Linear", the film that accompanies their new album "No Line on the Horizon". The film is 56 minutes long and is divided into 14 tracks to illustrate the fourteen songs on their album. The same year, he starred in the American blockbuster "G.I. Joe: Rise of the Cobra", in which he played a hacker.
In 2013, he played Guillermo Ortiz, a Hispanic Jesuit priest who turns into a killing machine, alongside Kiefer Sutherland Touch.
In 2014, Nabil Elderkin chose him to star in two music videos: "Fuck That", by American DJ Skrillex, and "Is It Worth It?", by singer Damian Marley.
In 2016, he played the antagonist in the "Money Man / Put That On My Set" video by A$AP Rocky and his group the A$AP Mob, directed by Dexter Navy, with a visual very inspired by "La Haine".
He plays the role of Sameer in the Hollywood blockbuster "Wonder Woman", released in 2017.
