Notes

Audemars Piguet, “montres numismatiques” (numismatic watches)

An early example of this type of watch which exists as a purse-watch or wristwatch. These watches appeared in the Art Deco period (circa 1930-1940), when they were rare due to the complexity of the case and the use of an extra-flat calibre. After the Second World War, their production resumed but it is only in the 1970’s that they will be really in vogue and of a more current realization.

A similar watch, a purse version, is published in Brunner, Gisbert L., Pfeiffer-Belli, Christian, & Wehrli, Martin K., Audemars Piguet, le maître de l’horlogerie, Le Brassus, Audemars Piguet Editions, 1993, p. 98, ills. 52-54, where it is referred to as a “montre numismatique” (numismatic watch).
