LOT 101

IKE & TINA TURNER, SAN FRANCISCO, 1967

LINER NOTES One of the early assignments I had for Rolling Stone (Issue Number Two) was to photograph Ike & Tina Turner in a little San Francisco club, a very well known club called the Hungry i. At the Hungry i the stage was low, no higher than a table, around three feet. Guests could slide right up to the front of the stage as I did, with nobody hassling you, no "two song minimum" or any of that nonsense. This was what was so important in those early days, having this kind of intimacy and access - not just backstage access. I'm not talking about big stage access, but in small clubs where you could walk right up to the stage. -Baron Wolman
