LOT 132

ELTON JOHN, LONDON, 1970
With a Gentleman of the Road, Soho Square
LINER NOTES Dick James Music asked me if I would take some pictures of a singer/piano player chap they had, so I said okay send him round to my studio. Next day this chap called Elton John turns up at my door. He didn't exactly look at all like a pop star; he seemed just another ordinary guy, very quiet and a bit shy. I asked him what he did and he said he'd been the piano player with Long John Baldry and lastly in a band called Bluesology. We did a few rolls of film in my studio but it seemed Elton wasn't 'coming alive' in the shots so I suggested a walk around Soho Square to try to loosen him up and get him more relaxed. At the end of the shoot Elton sat down on a park bench next to a 'Gentleman of the Road' who was eating his sandwich for lunch. It was the best picture of the entire shoot. Many years later it finally appeared in the CD booklet for Elton John Rare Masters, along with a few photos from my other shoots. -Barrie Wentzell
