BERTHOUD, THE COURTING COUPLE Berthoud A Paris, Swiss. Made circa 1780. Fine and rare, 18K gold and painted on enamel, quarter-repeating pocket watch with calendar.

Two-body, "Louis XVI", the back with a painted on enamel panel depicting a courting couple in a landscape, translucent royal blue enamel and gold paillon border, outer chased gold leaf border, the bezel decorated to match. White enamel, radial Arabic numerals and outer dot minute divisions with Arabic five-minute numerals, inner date ring with corresponding gold arrow hand. Gold beetle and poker hands. 42 mm., frosted gilt, full-plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance with flat balance spring, pierced and chased continental balance clock with polished steel endplate, repeating on a bell in the back of the case.
