Notes

Breguet was the best and the most celebrated watchmaker of his ti me. He also appears amongst the most aimed at victims of counterfeiting of his time, which lead him to the creation of a secret signature that would differentiate the authentic pieces from the forgeries. A large number of watches, bearing the apocryphal signature of Breguet, were produced during his life time and even after his death. Most of these watches were of poor quality and some of them, such as musical or quarter repeating watches with automaton jacks, were not even of a type ever produced by Breguet. Fakes often have the appearance of genuine Breguet creations; but to the eyes of a connoisseur, the lack of quality and several technical details reveal the forgery. On the other hand, this watch is of high quality and embodies most of the technical features of the repetitions de premiere classe, top quality watches produced by Breguet for everyday use: jumping hour hand, overhanging ruby cylinder escapement, elastic suspension to the top pivot of the balance and bimetallic compensation curb. Only the case, "forme collier", very much in the style of Breguet, does not carry the French hallmarks and the serial number was used by Breguet for another type of watch. It is however one of the best examples offorgery produced in Switzerland during Breguet's lifetime.
