Notes

The dedication reveals that this watch originally belonged to Edward Charles Baring, 1st Baron Revelstoke of Membland, and was given by him to his wife Emily in 1884. In 1892 she left it to their grandson, Albert Edward John Spencer, who became the grandfather of Diana Frances Spencer, later H.R.H The Princess of Wales, and thus the great grandfather of Princes William and Harry of England. Albert Edward John Spencer was born on April 13, 1828 and died on July 17, 1897. He married Louisa Emily Charlotte Bulteel on April 30, 1861. He was educated at Rugby School, Rugby, Warwickshire, England. He was created 1st Baron Revelstoke of Membland on June 30, 1885. He was a senior partner of Baring Brothers, merchant bankers, before 1890, and lived at Revelstoke Manor, Devon, and Membland Hall, Devon. Edward Charles Baring and Louisa Emily Charlotte Bulteel had ten children. Among them, was the Honourable Margaret Baring (1868-1906), who married Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer (1892-1975). They had two children, Lady Anne Spencer and Captain Edward John Spencer, 8th Earl Spencer (1924 - 1992). The latter married Hon. Frances Ruth Burke-Roch. Their daughter, Lady Diana Frances Spencer (1961-1997), married H.R.H. Charles, Prince of Wales, on July 29, 1981. Their first child, William, was born on June 21, 1982. Their second child, Henry, was born on September 15, 1984.
