Blued steel souscription hand with tapered point. M. 25???, gilt brass, souscription calibre with central going barrel, overhanging ruby cylinder escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, pare-chute suspension and bimetallic compensation curb.Signed on the dial and movement.Secret signature on the dial.Accompanied by certificate No. 4107 issued by Breguet on July 22, 1997, and a later fitted box.Diam. 61 mm.

Notes

George William Campbell, 6th Duke Argyll (1768-1839).The 6th Duke was known to several owners of Breguet watches. The first husband of his wife, for instance, was William Paget, the owner of the fine Breguet watch No. 2835 (see Antiquorum The Art of Breguet, April 1991, lot 34). The Prince of Wales, later Prince Regent and finally George IV, was possibly one of Breguet?s most loyal and prolific customers. The 6th Duke and the Prince of Wales were close friends, George III acting as Sponsor at the Duke?s baptism. The 6th Duke was councillor to therince Regent from 1811 to 1820. It was while accompanying the Prince Regent to Paris in the autumn of 1818 that the Duke was introduced to Breguet and subsequently bought this Souscription. The Prince Regent also purchased two other Breguet watches at the same time.
