“Guillotine” is the term used in Cartier’s manufacturing records to describe this type of watch, characterized by sprung shutters concealing the dial. This example represents an early production by Cartier, made before the design gained popularity in the 1920s.

Cartier pocket watches featuring the “guillotine” shutter mechanism are already rare in themselves. Examples incorporating a minute-repeating complication are even more exceptional, combining significant technical achievement with refined aesthetics. Such a combination is seldom encountered, making this piece particularly desirable among collectors.
