Cartier, Paris, No. 5066-3799, circa 1910. Very elegant 18 ct. gold and enamel, early "guillotine" keyless dress watch "à volets".

Three piece, massive, "bassine pincée", with alternated black and red translucent enamel strips over engine-turning with white champleve enamelled lines on the borders, the cover with a small dial aperture disclosed by gold shutters decorated with a white champleve enamelled monogram, flipping open or closed by depressing a button on the winding crown. D. Silver engine-turned with Arabic numerals. Blued steel Breguet hands. M. 16"', European Watch & Clock Co. rhodium plated, "fausses côtes" decoration, 18, jewels, straight line lever escapement, cut bimetallic balance, eight adjustments, Breguet balance spring. Signed on the dial, case and movement. In very good condition. Diam. 45 mm.

This is an early example of a model made by Cartier, very popular in the 1920's. " Guillotine" is the term used in the manufacturing records to describe this type of watch.
