Notes

"Vanitas", which in Latin means "emptiness", refers to a work of art symbolizing the ephemeral nature of earthly life, as expressed in the verse from Ecclesiastes: "vanity of vanities, all is vanity".
The vanitas genre was common in Northern European painting of the 16th and 17th centuries. Vanitas symbols include skulls (symbolizing the certainty of death); bubbles (the brevity and fragility of life); and fruit, flowers, and butterflies (all short-lived). In recent years, the vanitas theme has been taken up by many contemporary artists.
