Notes

The present lot represents the absolute zenith of Alfred Dunhill’s «functional luxury» and is a tour de force of Art Deco engineering. Originally debuted at the 1932 Goldsmiths’ Exhibition, where it was awarded First Prize for Craftsmanship and Design, the Compendium was marketed as a «portable writing desk» for the elite traveller.

This particular example is further distinguished by the signature of Matteo Cellini, known by the workshop pseudonym «Bando.» As the premier craftsman of the R&R workshop, Bando’s involvement signifies a piece of the highest possible specification, far exceeding the standard Dunhill production of the era.

Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the Compendium remains a mechanical marvel, seamlessly integrating a timepiece, a concealedpetrol lighter, a cigarette case, a telescopic pencil, an ivory writing tablet, a pocket knife, and a 5-inch measure. To find a complete example—particularly one bearing the Bando hallmark—is an event of significant importance for the connoisseurof rare objects of vertu and Art Deco design.
