Fabioo de Sanctis
Rome, February 7, 1931

After graduating in architecture in 1957 in Italia, Fabio de Sanctis quickly became interested in different materials, their intrinsic qualities and characteristics.

In 1963, he founded Officina l’11, in association with Ugo Sterpini (1927-2000); this studio promotes experimentation and innovation in decorative arts and design.

In 1964, during a trip to Paris, he met André Breton (1896-1966), through José Pierre (1927-1999), a French writer, critic and art historian specialising in the surrealist movement. He also met Max Ernst (1891-1976) and Louis Aragon (1897-1982).

The following year, he took part in L'Ecart Absolu, the last exhibition of the Surrealist group during the lifetime of André Breton – who devoted a passage to de Sanctis in the re-edition of Le Surréalisme et la peinture the same year.

In 1966, he exhibited in New York at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA, June 29 – September 5), alongside Man Ray (Radnitsky, Emmanuel, known as; 1890-1976), Robert Rauschenberg (1925-2008) and Jasper Johns (1930).

In 1968, he took part in the Surrealist exhibition Le principe du Plaisir in Prague, before the group was dissolved.
In the 1970s, he stopped working as an architect to devote himself exclusively to sculpture. He saw sculpture as necessarily linked to the social environment and produced numerous works in situ.

In 1976, he was invited to the Italian Pavilion of the 38th Venice Biennale. He now lives and works in Rome.
He then presented his work in several exhibitions around the world, notably in Geneva, at the Galerie de l’Hôtel-de-Ville (1980, 1990 and 2001), the premises of Claude Voutat (1932) and his wife Nelly Voutat.

In 1993, Fabio de Sanctis embarked on a project to produce a wristwatch with Claude Voutat. Originally planned as 25 pieces, only ten were finally produced between 1993 and 1995; five for the artist and five for the Genevan gallery owner. The artist offered one of his pieces to the Museo della Torre dell’Orologio in Rome.
