The Élégante occupies a singular place within F.P. Journe’s production, approaching quartz technology with the same concern for technical originality and refinement found throughout the manufacture’s mechanical watches. In the 48 mm version, its distinctive flat tortue-shaped case is executed in lightweight titanium, giving the watch substantial visual presence while remaining remarkably comfortable on the wrist.
Particular attention is drawn to the white luminescent dial, one of the defining elements of the Élégante. Its clean surface is framed by F.P. Journe’s characteristic typography and railway-style minute track, with blued hands providing a sharp contrast. Small seconds are displayed at 6 o’clock, while an aperture at approximately 4:30 reveals part of the electro-mechanical mechanism, adding an unexpected technical detail to an otherwise restrained dial.
The calibre 1210, an electro-mechanical movement developed specifically for the Élégante. A mechanical motion detector visible through the dial allows the watch to enter standby after approximately 35 minutes without movement. The hands stop to conserve energy while the movement continues to measure elapsed time. When the watch is worn again, the hands automatically advance to the correct time. This ingenious system considerably extends battery life while preserving the intuitive experience of a conventional wristwatch.
The titanium case gives the model a distinctly contemporary character, its cool grey tone contrasting particularly well with the luminous white dial. Here, the addition of the vivid orange rubber strap introduces a strong colour accent and reinforces the more relaxed, modern personality of the Élégante without distracting from the architecture of the case.
Dating from 2024, this example illustrates F.P. Journe’s unconventional approach to modern watchmaking, combining an intelligent electro-mechanical calibre, an immediately recognisable case design and an unusually graphic luminescent dial.
