Yellow gold and enamel, open-face, key-winding, round-shaped, “Directoire” thin pocket watch. Case-back painted on enamel on gold by an unidentified Genevan workshop, showing two young women talking to each other, one of whom has a partially stripped chest, near a peacock, on a royal blue flinqué enamel (translucent enamel over guilloché engine-turning), in a neoclassical décor of paillons; invisible hinges. Gregson, Jean, Paris (fl.1776-1790) Watchmaker from England, Jean Gregson (?-?) was active in Paris in the second half of the 18th century. He did not demand mastery but obtained, in 1776, the title of “Marchand Horloger Privilégié du Roi suivant la Cour et Conseils de Sa Majesté”, whether “Watchmaker of the King”, although foreign and protestant. Jean Gregson seems to have left France at the time of the Revolution. He is no longer mentioned in Paris after 1790. He was previously established at rue Dauphine and signs his watches: “Horloger du Roy” or “Horloger de la Cour de France”.
