Notes

The Opus V

The present watch, numbered 35/100, is part of the Opus V series, produced in a limited edition of 100 examples. The edition comprises the following variations:

  • 45 examples in pink gold
  • 45 examples in platinum
  • 7 examples in platinum set with brilliant-cut diamonds
  • 3 examples in platinum set with baguette-cut diamonds
The Opus V represents an outstanding example of innovative contemporary watchmaking, combining avant-garde horological design with sophisticated mechanical engineering. Created through a collaboration between Harry Winston’s Rare Timepieces division and independent watchmaker Felix Baumgartner of Urwerk, the Opus V was unveiled at Baselworld in 2005.

The watch features an off-centre movement with a satellite-hour display, inspired by the wandering-hour indications found in certain early pocket watches. These traditionally consisted of a semicircular minute scale, graduated from 0 to 60, and an aperture indicating the hours.

In the Opus V, the satellite-hour display comprises three separate rotating blocks, each carrying four numerals, indicating the hours as they travel around two axes. Arranged like satellites within a three-dimensional rotating system, the blocks create a distinctive and highly unconventional display. The minutes are indicated by a retrograde triangular pointer moving across a 120-degree scale.

On the dial side, a day-and-night indicator is positioned between 7 and 8 o’clock, while the power-reserve indicator, between 10 and 11 o’clock, displays the remaining energy stored in the mainspring. The movement provides a power reserve of approximately 120 hours, equivalent to five days of continuous operation.

The movement’s baseplate and other components are made of ARCAP P40, a copper-nickel alloy offering enhanced stability and strength compared with conventional brass constructions. The movement is microblasted and polished to achieve a distinctive matte, sandblasted finish.

On the case back, a service indicator features a scale graduated from 0 to 5 years, providing an indication of the recommended maintenance interval. An index-adjustment screw also allows the owner to fine-tune the rate of the watch within a range of approximately ±15 seconds per day.

The Opus Series

  • Opus 2 – Antoine Preziuso (2002)
