International Watch Co., Schaffhausen, ?Mark XII?, Automatic. Produced in the 1990?s. Fine, center-seconds, self-winding, water-resistant, stainless steel, aviator?s wristwatch with date and 38 hours autonomy and an IWC steel buckle.

C. two-body, polished and brushed, screwed-down case back, soft iron core to provide an antimagnetic shield, screwed-down winding crown, sapphire crystal. D. black with tritium-coated Arabic numerals, square, Bâton and triangular indexes, aperture for the date. ?Bâton? tritium-coated hands. M. Cal. 884/2, rhodium-plated, 36 jewels, lever escapement, monometallic balance, shock-absorber, self-compensating flat balance-spring. Dial, case and movement signed. Diam. 36 mm.

Notes

The first aviator wristwatch-Mark IX-was produced by IWC in 1940. Similar large watches were also made by Lange & Söhne, Wempe, Stowa and Laco, and were individually tested by a special department in the Gesundbrunnen, near Glashütte. The ?Mark X?, released in 1944, was widely used by the British, German and American armies during and after World War II. Its successor, the ?Mark XI?, was a favorite of the British Royal Air Force. The present example, the ?Mark XII?, was not released until the 1990s, almost 50 years after the ?Mark XI?.
