IWC, “Yacht Club II”
Launched in 1977, the “Yacht Club II” remains in production until 1980 and was commercialized under different references: • Ref. 3211, with leather strap; • Ref. 3212, with integrated bracelet; • Ref. 9109, with integrated bracelet. It is sometimes said that it is a model designed by Gérald Genta (1931-2011), the famous Genevan designer jeweller, but it seems that this is not the case. Genta on the other hand drew well for IWC the “Ingénieur SL” in 1976 (“SL” originally meaning “Steel Line” and not “Sport Line”). The “Yacht Club II” was born just after the “Polo-Club” and the “Golf-Club”, both produced between 1975-1976 and 1980 (whose paternity is also given to Genta). The Ref. 3211 exists in stainless steel case, with plated rhodium dial or black dial, and, in 18K gold case, with black dial or gilt dial. The Ref 3212 exists in stainless steel case, with plated rhodium dial or black dial, and, in two-tone case (stainless steel and 14K gold), with plated rhodium dial, gilt dial or black dial. Less than 500 pieces (all variations together) have been produced; perhaps between 300 to 400 examples. The Ref. 9109 seems exists only in 18K yellow gold and was produced in very few examples, with gilt dial or lapis-lazuli dial. There are very few “Yacht Club II” with self-winding movements; most are produced with a quartz movement. The self-winding movement is the Cal. 3254 (with centre-seconds and date), based on the Jaeger-LeCoultre Cal. 889. It seems that Qaboos ibn Said (1940-1920), Sultan of Oman (1970-2020), received six IWC watches, Ref. 9109, “Yacht Club II”, with lapis-lazuli dial, via the house of Khimji Ramdas, Muscat, supplier to the court.
