LOT 70

LES PAUL, MAHWAH, NJ, 1995

LINER NOTES This photo was done for the Arts & Leisure section of the New York Times, on the occasion of Les' 80th birthday. The shoot was in the basement studio of his home. Among many historic objects and innovations there, he had a larger than life size photo of himself at age 15. As soon as I saw it, I knew I wanted to shoot him in front of it. I wasn't entirely sure he'd like the idea. I did several other photos to be sure I was well covered. I then asked if we could do one more photo; Les Paul at 80 with Les Paul at 15. He said, "wait a minute," and disappeared. He returned with the same guitar (w/a new neck), the same harmonica and the same rack, 65 years later! He loved the idea! It ran very big in the Sunday Times. Many folks think it is a montage created in PhotoShop, but it's a straight, unmanipulated photograph. -Joe Rosen
