WOODSTOCK, BETHEL, NY, 1969
LINER NOTES I drove up toward Woodstock in New York's Catskill Mountains and got to within four or five
miles of the festival when traffic came to a complete halt.
I heard radio reports that the police might shut down all
roads, including the New York State Thruway, which led
to the nearby town of Bethel. And that's what they did.
I had to walk four-plus miles to my motel? One photo
I took as I walked to the site on the first day remains one
of the most iconic images from Woodstock: an S-shaped
curve of cars, literally hundreds of vehicles trapped on
the road. It became one of my most widely published
photographs around the world from that event.
