Notes

The case of this watch carries the Paris hallmarks for 1789 and is very similar to cases made by Amy Gros for the very first series of Breguct "perpetual" (self-winding) watches; however, according to the fractional number (9/6), engraved on the dust cap, it was only completed by jean Baptiste Lepaute in 1796, after the Revolution. The dial can also be compared to those by Breguct from the time when he first fixed the gongs around the movement. Invented in 1783 in order to reduce the thickness of repeating watches, gongs were first placed by Breguet across the back plate; then they were rolled inside the band of the case, and later, with the early series of "perpetual ", were fitted on the inner side of the front plate. It is only from 1796 that they started being made thinner and much longer.
