Notes

This watch was undoubtedly made by Sarton for a member of the very influential ancient Hassedic Jewish Community living in Antwerp and mostly involved in the diamond business. The Sefiroth. The Sefiroth is the name given in the Cabal to the ten manifestations of the divine essence, represented as parts of the human body: Kether Eliyon (The Supreme Crown) symbol of infinity. Hokhmah (Wisdom) is located in the brain. Binah (Intelligence, Discernment) is located in the heart. Hessed (Mercifulness) is located in the right arm. Guevourah (Power, Justice) is located in the left arm. Tifereth (Beauty, Harmony) lacking on the engraving, should be located in the body itself. Malkhouth (Kingdom) is located in the feet. Netsah (Eternity, Victory), is located in the left thigh. Hod (Magnificence, Glory) is located in the right thigh. Yessod (Foundation) is located in the masculinity. We gratefully acknowledge the assistance provided by Mr Charli Malka, Ministre Oft/ant de la Connmrnaute Israelite de Geneve, in the interpretation of the Cabalistic symbolism of the Sefiroth.
