Unsigned (Chaponniere, Geneve?), circa 1810. Fine 18 ct. gold, quarter repeating musical watch.

C. Three body, Empire with reeded band, the back engine-turned "a grains d'orge". Hinged gilt brass cuvette. D. Gold engine-turned with Breguet numerals on white enamel cartouches and outer minute ring. Blued steel Breguet hands. M. Gilt brass with free standing barrels, cylinder escapement with plain brass three-arm balance and flat balance spring. Cylinder musical train playing on the hour or at will, with 20 tooth comb grouped in pairs and covered by a gilt brass panel. Quarter repeating on two gongs by depressing the pendant. In very good condition. Diam. 55 mm.

Notes

Chaponniere was reputed in Geneva in the early years of the 19th Century for the quality of the musical watches made in his workshop. He was apparently specialised in the production of musical watches with pin cylinder mechanisms.
