Unsigned, French, circa 1750. Fine and very rare, mahogany, weight driven, hour and quarter striking, moon phase astronomical, eight day going, Horloge de port, with carillon and alarm.

C. Coffin shaped, the moulded front door with glazed pendulum aperture, the shaped top with glazed side panels and fine ormolu applied rocaille decoration. D. Silvered chapter ring with Roman numerals and outer Arabic minute ring, the gilt brass centre with geometrical floret decoration, central alarm setting disc, subsidiary seconds and moon phase aperture with outer date and moon calendar rings. Blued steel Louis XIV hands. M. Brass lantern type , three train, posted frame with turned columns, Graham escapement, seconds beating pendulum with spring suspension. Hours and quarters independent striking trains, carillon on four bells with four hammers, alarm striking on a bell. In very good condition. Dim. 210 x 50 x 31 cm.

Such long case clocks are named Horloges de Ports, for at the period they were produced, in harbour cities only, such as Bordeaux, Saint-Malo or Dieppe, the furniture was then made of mahogany, coming from overseas countries.
