?Two-Day Marine Chronometer? O(nésime) Dumas, a St. Nicolas, Pres Dieppe, No. 1031. Made circa 1860. Fine and rare, mahogany two-day marine chronometer with power reserve indicator.

C. Three-body, mahogany, with external brass handles, glazed upper section, brass bowl in gimballed suspension, ratchet key in its bracket in the corner. D. Frosted and silvered with Roman numerals, subsidiary seconds and 49-hour power reserve sector. Gilt ?spade? hands. M. 76 mm., frosted gilt brass full plate with recess for the mainspring barrel, cylindrical pillars, secured by screws, 11 jewels, reversed fusee and chain, Earnshaw spring-detent escapement, cut bimetallic compensation balance, free-sprung helical balance spring with terminal curves, two cylindrical temperature adjustment weights and four screws, two mean time adjustment nuts. Dial and box signed. Dim.18 x 16 x 16 cm.

Notes

Onésime Dumas (1824-1889) A chronometer-maker and nephew of Henri Motel, he was an apprentice first to Perrelet and then to Charles-Auguste Berthoud. After having worked for a short period with Motel, he succeeded Gannery at St. Nicolas d?Aliermont. He exhibited precision horology at Rouen in 1856 and chronometers at Paris in 1857. He was the first maker in France to produce chronometers of English caliber.
