Outer: Two-body, the back with finely painted on enamel miniature depicting a galleon at anchor on a wooded coastline, pink and blue opalescent sky and engine-turned ground simulating a setting sun, translucent red guilloché enamel border and outer green, white, red and blue enamel border, bezel decorated to match. Inner: two-body, ?bassine?, polished. D. White enamel with radial Islamic numerals, outer minute track and Islamic five minute numerals. Gold "beetle and poker" hands. M. 29 mm., frosted gilt brass full plate with pierced vase pillars, fusee with chain, verge escapement, plain steel three-arm balance, flat balance spring, gilt brass English cock, silver regulation dial. Dial and movement signed. Cases with faux London hallmarks. Diam. 40 mm.

James Markwick & Markwick Markham. James Markwick the elder became Free of the Clockmaker's Company on August 6, 1666. His son, James Marckwick Jr., became Free of the Company in 1692 by patrimony, and died in 1730. The younger James Markwick was an eminent maker, Master of the Clockmakers' Company in 1720 and a very early user of jeweled bearings. In later years he was in partnership with his son-in-law Robert Markham who succeeded him, under the trading name of Markwick Markham which became famous for watches destined for the Turkish market.
