C. Four body, massive, "bassine", the back set with a large garnet cabochon with applied diamond-set naine Charlotte, surmounted by a Royal crown. Matching garnet-set brooch with identical decoration. Hinged gold cuvette. D. White enamel with Roman numerals and outer red Arabic minute ring. Blued steel "spade " hands. M.11"', gilt brass, 12 jewels, cylinder escapement, plain brass threearm balance, flat balance spring with regulator. Signed on the fitted box only. In very good condition. Diam. 29 mm.

Charlotte - Princess of Sax-Cobourg-Gotha and of Belgium (Laeken 1840 - Château de Boucheau 1927). Daughter of Leopold I, King of Belgium. In 1857, she married the Archduke Maximilian who became Emperor of Mexico in 1864. After her husband's execution, in 1867, she became insane until the end of her days.
