Roberth Gerth & Cie, Chaux-de-Fonds ( Switzerland), circa 1840. Fine and unusual very large 18 ct. gold, quarter repeating, dead independent seconds watches made for astronomers with special 15 seconds striking device.

C. Four body with reeded band, bezels pendant and bow with floral cast decoration, the back engine-turned. Hinged gold cuvette engraved with technical details. D. White enamel with Roman numerals. Gold Breguet hands. M. 24"', gilt brass triple train, 25 jewels, with going barrel on each of the three trains, ruby cylinder escapement, flat balance spring. Repeating on gongs with pull-twist piston through the pendant. Dead centre independent seconds with a flirt on the escape pinion and boit in the band. Driven from the independent secons trian, a special device enables the watch to strike are every 15 seconds. Signed on the cuvette. In very good condition. Diam. 61 mm.

The independent seconds wheel is divided by four pins operating detent with passing slot, releasing a double-ended fly controlling the hammer through the subsidiary third train.
