Notes

Pierre-Simon Gounouilhou born in 1779, settled in Geneva in 1779 and died in 1847. A maker of great repute, he began his career as a maker of automaton and musical objects and watches, including the 'kitchen' model, but later produced more conventional repeating watch of slim design. The example now offered for sale was made very shortly after his arrivai in Geneva, and can be compared to the early work of Frisard and Isaac-Daniel Piguet (before the latter went into partnership with Meylan). Unlike the more usual automaton watches which employ vari-coloured gold for the automaton figures, ail the moving parts are enamelled in this watch.
