David Rousseau, Geneva, circa 1665. Very fine and rare silver hour striking coach watch with alarm.

C. Double body, bassine, profusely pierced and engraved with elaborate Summer flowers. D. Gilt brass chapter ring with Roman numerals, "fleurs de lys" half hour divisions and silver alarm setting disc with engraved decoration matching that of the case. Chased gilt brass single hand and blued steel pointer. M. Hinged gilt brass full plate with elaborate gilt brass pierced and foliate engraved pillars, verge escapement, plain steel balance without spring, gilt brass irregular cock pierced and engraved with flowers, secured by a screw, worm-and-wheel set up with silver disc. Striking on a bell with gilt brass fixed barrel pierced an engraved with scrolling foliage and silver count wheel on the back plate. Signed on the back plate. In very good condition. Diam. 85 mm.

Notes

Rousseau David (1641-1738) he was the son of Jean Rousseau and grandfather of the eminent Philosopher Jean-Jacques. Apprentice to Jean-François Lachis, his brother in law, in 1653. Among his master pieces: a miniature watch of 19 mm diameter, rock crystal crucifix watches, pendant watches in the foret of a tulip and other flowers. His workshop was in Grand-Rue, in Geneva from 1720 to 1738. He formed four apprentices: Loys Gaudy in 1669, Esaye Querel in 1670, Pierre Bouvier in 1687, Bonifas Bourcart in 1698 and Jean III Fizan in 1702.
