Notes

Virginie Hue de Breval. Later Mrs. Rousseau, was a pupil of Lethiers and Augustin, she worked in Paris as miniature painter. She exhibited her work at the Salon de Paris from 1810 to 1822 where she began with a self portrait. She was a talented artist and should be better known. Her miniatures are very finely painted and the portraits are full of expression. She used carmin colours with grey shadows and the hair carefully painted. She made the portraits of Marechal Ney and of Louis Rougé. A very fine miniature was at the Albertina Exhibition in Vienna in 1924. Cf. Schidlof: Dictionnaire de la miniature en Europe.
