Not signed, attributed to Piguet & Capt, Geneva, circa 1810. "The Pit Sawyers". Fine and rare 18 ct. gold and enamel watch with an automaton scene.

C. Three body, Empire, with glazed back, the bezels and pendant with champlevé enamelled decoration (slightly restored). Fine and unusual varicoloured gold automaton scene on the back depicting pit sawyer planking a log, applied on a painted enamel mountain landscape (slightly restored), a water mill on the right, driven by a water fall simulated by spinning rods, a sitting lady with a sheep on the foreground. The noise of the saw is realistically simulated by that of the automaton mechanism. D. White enamel with Breguet numerals (slightly restored). Cohl half moon bands. M. Gilt brass full plate, double train with cylindrical pillars, going train vvith fusee and chain, verge escapement, plain brass three-arm balance, flat balance spring and regulator. The automaton train with going barrel. In ver)' good condition. Diam. 58 mm.

Although it is not signed, this watch can be attributed to Piguet & Capt 'ho were the best makers of the time for such complicated watches with automatons, but not organised to trade. Therefore they had to deal with retailers who did not wish the pieces to be signed, with any other naine than their own.
