Thomas Yates, Preston, No. 2311, with Chester hallmarks for 1855. Fine and unusual silver watch with Yates patentee escapement.

C. Three body "forme quatre baguettes", engineturned with fixed cuvette marked "E.K.". D. Eggshell enamel with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Gold "fleurs de lys" hands. M. Hinged gilt brass full plate with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain, pointed tooth lateral single roller lever escapement with hall seconds beating two-arm compensation balance with gold timing screws and ruby endstone, flat balance spring. Gilt brass dustcap. Signed on the dial and back plate. Diam. 50 mm.

Note: Following Thomas Yates' patent, the unusual wheel train of this watch was specially calculated for a half second beating balance: Wheel Pinion Fusee 75 teeth 2nd wheel 64 teeth 10 3rd wheel 60 teeth 8 leaves 4th wheel 56 teeth 8 leaves Escape wheel 15 teeth 14 64 x 60/8 x 56/8 x 15/14 x 2 = 7200 oscillation per hour or 2 per second. THOMAS YATES of Preston worked in the second quarter of the 19th century and his particularly known for his seconds and half-seconds beating lever watches.
