Thomas Shepherd fecit, circa 1620. Very rare gilt-metal and rock crystal watch of lobed form, with double six-hour dial.

C. Two-piece engraved frame, the borders with a hatched pattern, the interior with delicate foliage, duo-decagonal lobed rock crystal back and hinged cover, loose-ring pendant and button finial. D. Oval, gilt-brass with engraved Roman chapters calibrated I-V and VI-XII on two concentric rings, with foliage engraved border and centre. Bluedsteel tulip pattern hand (replaced). M. Oval, partially engraved gilt-brass plates and turned balluster pillars, fusee with gut, short train with verge escapement, plain two-arm steel balance without spring. Irregular open-work florally pierced and engraved cock secured by a pin. Worm-and-wheel set-up with silver regulator disc. Signed on the movement. In good condition. Dim. 51 x 32 mm.

Note: A dial configured for 6 hours has traditionally been associated with Italian watches and clocks, although in this case it seems to be more a question of the ratios used in the train. Clearly it allows for well spaced and therefore legible numerals.
