Ellicott & Company, Royal Exchange London, circa 1790 Fine mahogany and oak striking bracket clock.

C. Arched rectangular with square base internally arching turret; mahogany with moulded brass feet, plain brass front corner columns, spherical brass finials and carrying handles, applied fish-scale brass grid to side panels, base of turret and front door backed with red silk. Glazed back door. D. white enamel, arabic numerals, pierced brass hands; silvered regulator disc at 12 o'clock. M. brass, plated with scolloped corners, turned plain pillars, fusee with gut fine for both trains, anchor escapement, brass pendulum with spring suspension adjustable from front by a key operated arbor moving meshed racks carried on parallel arms; striking on bell, internal count wheel. Border decoration and signature on back-plate. In very good condition. Dim. 45 x 24 x 18 cm.

Note: The applied fish-scale grid decoration, the stamped semi-circular, toothed fine frieze to the back-plate, the oval surrounding the back-plate signature and the kidney-shaped cocks to the suspension are all typical of clocks made for Ellicott by Aynsworth & John Thwaites, the leading suppliers of dock movements to 18th century London makers.
