John R. Arnold, London, Invenit et Fecit No. 210, made circa 1810. Fine small one day going marine chronometer.

C. Later three body brass bound mahogany box with external brass handles, glazed upper section with hinged lid. Brass bowl and gimballed suspension, the bezel with domed glass. D. White enamel with Roman numerals and subsidiary seconds. Blued steel "spade" hands. M. Snailed brass full plate, relieved for the barrel, with cylindrical pillars, fusee with chain and maintaining power, Arnold spring detent escapement, "OZ" balance, ruby end-stone, free sprung blued steel helical balance spring with terminal curve. Signed on the dial and movement. In very good condition. Dial diam. 76 mm. Dim. 16.5 x 15.5 x 15.5 cm.

Note: Very fine example of an early small chronometer by John Roger Arnold, with "OZ" balance. According to Vaudrey Mercer in Arnold and Son, 1972, this chronometer was not originally in a gimballed suspension, see page 219. Marine chronometers with an enamel dial are fairly rare.
