Notes

Abraham Caillatte (1642 - 1710), French refugee, son of Matthieu Caillatte. He worked frequently with Pierre Huaud le Père. Pierre Huault, emigrated Huguenot, was coming from Blois where he was apprentice. He kept in Geneva part of the technic learned with his French Masters. Although virtually none of his surviving work is signed, the style and technique of P. Huaud's work is now clearly identifiable. The pale blue ground is typical, but on this particular case, there is an unusual raised decoration of scrolls painted en grisaille, with the portrait scene on a raised panel in the back. The decorated bezel is also a rarity.
