Galle Rue Vivienne à Paris, circa 1815. Fine 8 day going, hour and hait hour striking mantel clock depicting Venus and Adonis drinking from the fountain of eternal love.
C. Rectangular white-veined green marble base on 'bun' feer and with gilt brass 'tulip' frieze; rectangular gilt brass case set at the right hand end of the base with applied corner-pieces in the form of flaming torches resting on the backs of swans. The outer side of the case carnes an applied central winged figure holding trophies aloft in each hand. To the left of the clock Venus and Adonis bend towards a cup held towards them by a cupid kneeling on top of the movement beside a basin of water while from the inner side of the clock water founts from a lion's head into a pool below. D. White enamel with Roman numerals. Gilt brass chased hands. M. Brass circular with going barrels both for the going and the striking train, anchor escapement, pendulum with silk suspension. Striking on a bell with count wheel on the back plate. Signed on the dial. In very good condition. Dim. 45 x 52 x 19 cm.
